ABOUT MAURITANIA
Mauritania, officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is a country in North Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean in the west, by Western Sahara in the north, by Algeria in the northeast, by Mali in the east and southeast, and by Senegal in the southwest. It is named after the Roman province of Mauretania, even though the modern state covers a territory far to the southwest of the old province. The capital and largest city is Nouakchott, located on the Atlantic coast.

Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, offers a unique blend of traditional and modern influences, making it an intriguing destination for travelers. Visitors can explore the bustling markets such as the Nouakchott Silver Market, where local artisans display their handcrafted jewelry, or take a stroll along the city's Atlantic coastline to enjoy the scenic views. The National Museum of Mauritania provides insight into the country's rich history and culture, while the lively fishing port offers a glimpse into the daily life of local fishermen. Additionally, the nearby Banc d'Arguin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers.
Chinguetti is a ksar or medieval trading centre in northern Mauritania, lying on the Adrar Plateau east of Atar. Founded in the 13th century, as the center of several trans-Saharan trade routes, this tiny city continues to attract a handful of visitors who admire its spare architecture, exotic scenery and ancient libraries. The city is seriously threatened by the encroaching desert; high sand dunes mark the western boundary and several houses have been abandoned to the encroaching sand.
