Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve
The Mariposa Monarca Biosphere Reserve is located in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt pine-oak forests ecoregion, in the Mexico state of Michoacán in the central Mexican highlands in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt range, mostly on the eastern side of the state. The Reserve was created to protect the wintering habitat of the Monarch butterfly and contains over 56,000 hectares of sanctuary land.
